June 28, 2025 - So...I got a Switch 2 anyway
Look, I realize that I'm just a human with that sometimes ignores logic. In theory, I probably should have prioritized my student loans over a shiny new console, yet here we are. I got a Switch 2 for my birthday. For the past few weeks, I tried convincing myself that I didn't need a Switch 2 because of greedy practices, outrageous prices, and not enough Switch 2 exclusives; basically parroting many of the arguments from the online discourse. But I knew deep down, I still wanted it.
I even borrowed my friend's Steam Deck, an objectively better option for my money, to see if this would hold me over until Christmas. As much as I respected that device, I realized how little use I would get out of it because of my small Steam library. It was essentially a distraction to what I really wanted: the Switch 2. It didn't help that I was surrounded by friends who let me try their Switch 2's at their place, further cementing my desire for it.
Even more surprising was that my notoriously frugal mother convinced me that getting a Switch 2 now would be better than waiting until Christmas because who knows what our financial situation would be in the future? Plus I had the perfect excuse of my birthday coming up...so I caved. With the help of my family's birthday money and my registration from the official Nintendo store actually getting back to me, I treated myself with a Switch 2. And of course, the system delivered on my actual birthday, like it was fate.
Now that I have this controversial console in my possession, what do I think of it now? Well...it's the Switch, but better! Like everyone else expected. Hype is obviously more exciting in the moment, but I'm just glad there isn't some horrible design flaw right out the gate. It's been a stable launch window, which is all I ask for if I was gonna buy this console at launch. I never usually get consoles this early, but this time it felt unavoidable. Especially in turbulent times like these, I can afford to have a little more fun in my life instead of penny-pinching myself into misery.
The good thing about taking forever to beat games is that I still have a MASSIVE Switch 1 backlog that will be perfect for my upgraded console after sticking with the launch model for 7 years. Those load times, man.
